'Heading SouthWest' is an adventure-cycling challenge across Portugal in one-stage. The route starts in the Center of the most southwestern country of Europe and finishes in the most southwestern region: Algarve. Along the on-road set route with approximately 1.000K and 15.000M of elevation gain, long-distance cyclists will face the diversity of the Portuguese landscapes - from mountains to plains - heading the Atlantic Ocean. The adventure starts on May 21st 2022 in Coimbra. 'Heading SouthWest' is an event designed by Finisterra.

Route & Bike | Heading SouthWest is a set route event: 99% on-road and 1% gravel. A road bike with 28mm tyres is appropriate to face the off-road and the tarmac sections with worst quality. However all types of tyres and bicycles are allowed (except e-bikes).

Spirit & Rules | The challenge follows the bikepacking and self-supported ultracycling principles. Drafting and third-party support aren't allowed, except in the duo category (both riders can help each other). Personal insurance is mandatory. Diversity is a gold value for Finisterra: all applications are encouraged despite sex/gender, age or nationality.

Registration/Fee | 'SouthWest' main goal is to promote adventure-cycling in Portugal as well as a cycling destination. There isn't an entry fee. Riders are financially responsible to use their own tracker or to rent it. Minimal organizational support will be provided by Finisterra: route file, race manual/road-book, briefing session, full support with tracker rental or mapping integration of own tracker, online live tracking (by Follow My Challenge).

Transportation | Coimbra - the starting point - is a historical city with 100.000 inhabitants and the local university is the main source of dynamism. Traveling from Lisbon or Porto by train is fast (1H30M), easy, cheap and bike friendly.  The finish point - Germano BiciArte Café (Alte, Algarve region) is 12 kilometers away from Messines-Alte train station (national system railway).
